Historical Figures of Macao
Introduction:
To encourage Macao primary and secondary school students to actively engage in reading, deepen their understanding of Macao’s history and culture, and enrich bilingual learning resources in Chinese and Portuguese, the University of Macau Alumni and Development Office, in collaboration with the Centre for Chinese History and Culture, has planned the publication of the Chinese History and Culture Comic Series — Historical Figures of Macao.
Since 2018, the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau has been publishing the Chinese History and Culture Comic Series, which presents Chinese historical stories in comic form with trilingual narration (Chinese with Mandarin pinyin, Portuguese, and English). The series vividly depicts fascinating chapters of history, enabling Macao’s primary and secondary school students—particularly those in Portuguese- and English-medium schools—as well as young readers in Portuguese-speaking countries to better understand Chinese history and culture. The previously published Chinese Mythology Comic Series has been warmly received by Macao students.
In 2024, to highlight Macao’s unique character as a place where Chinese culture predominates while Sino-Western cultural coexistence thrives, the Centre launched the Macao series of the comics. The first set, themed Historical Figures of Macao, consists of four volumes, each portraying important figures who played key roles in Sino-Western cultural exchange, presented in comic form.
