Organised by the Macao Foundation and the Chinese Peking Opera Arts Foundation, and co-organised by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) of the University of Macau (UM), the Chinese Peking Opera Art Troupe‘s performance and exchange activity in Macao, the Peking Opera Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity, was successfully held recently.
The Peking Opera Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity was taken place at the University Hall (N2) of the UM on 13th October at 7:30pm. Before the performance, Cheang Neng Ian, Deputy Director of the CCHC of the UM, , received the calligraphy presented by Zhang Jianguo, President of the Chinese Peking Opera Arts Foundation, and Li Jun, Vice President of the Chinese Peking Opera Arts Foundation. Other guests including Wu Zhiliang, President, Board of Directors of Macao Foundation, Ho Teng Iat, Permanent President of the Women’s Association of Macau, President of the Board of Directors of the Macau Science Centre, Mu Xinxin, were present to the event.
The opera is an important excerpt from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It tells the story of Sun Quan. In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, when Liu Bei was occupying Jiaozhou and did not return it, Sun set up a beauty plan with Zhou Yu to falsely claim that Sun’s younger sister, Sun Shangxiang, would be promised to Liu in exchange for Jiaozhou. The performance was staged by the Shijiazhuang Peking Opera Troupe and featured three national first-class actors, including Zhang Jianguo and Dong Yuanyuan from the National Peking Opera Theatre as Qiao Xuan and Sun Shangxiang respectively, and Deng Muwei from the Tianjin Peking Opera Theatre as Sun Quan, along with a number of other troupe members, in a joint performance of the classic opera. The opera featured a wide range of performers , including actors, actresses and performers from all walks of life, as well as a lively and festive atmosphere. The staff and students of the University of Macau actively participated in the performance, which was well received by the audience with cheers and applause. In order to enhance Macao residents’ understanding of the art of Peking Opera and to promote Chinese traditional culture, the Macao Foundation has been cooperating with the Chinese Peking Opera Troupe since 2009, and this year is the 11th time that the Troupe has been invited to perform in Macao, showcasing the unique charm of the Chinese national art form and the divine flavour of the Peking Opera, which has been highly acclaimed every time it performs in Macao. The CCHC of the UM was specially invited to co-organise this event, so that the academic staff and students of UM could experience the beauty of the quintessence of Chinese culture from a close distance.
