“Glimpses of Time: Grand Opening of Exhibition of Inaugural Issues of Contemporary Chinese Magazines
The Exhibition of Inaugural Issues of Contemporary Chinese Magazines, hosted by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, was grandly opened on 26 April, 2024, in the lobby of the Cultural Building (E34) at the University of Macau. Collector Fu Tianhong, Professor Emeritus of Beijing Normal University (Zhuhai), delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the importance of the exhibition. He noted that magazines are a primary medium for cultural exchange in traditional societies and key evidence to cultural production methods within the traditional order. Thus, a single magazine can bear witness to a period of history, and the inaugural issues of magazines can bear witness to an era. By showcasing the inaugural issues of contemporary Chinese magazines, this exhibition delves into the transformations and cultural developments that have occurred since China’s reform and opening up, urging more people to pay attention to and uncover the rich values inherent in these inaugural issues.
Fu Tianhong’s Speech
The exhibition gathers 317 inaugural issues of magazines from the 1970s to the early 21st century from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. These magazine inaugural issues focus on the development of magazines in different stages of the reform and opening up, and will bring a visual and intellectual feast across the ages to today’s audience, who have already adapted to the digital age.
The exhibition is held at the Cultural Building (E34-G016 Exhibition Hall) of the UM from 25 April to 24 May, 2024. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., while it is closed on public holidays.
This exhibition will promote the in-depth development of contemporary Chinese cultural studies and provide an important platform for exchange between the academic community and the public.
