On the morning of July 15, 2020, Zhu Shoutong, director of the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, and the members of CCHC visit the Macao Pui Ching Middle School. First, they visited the Chinese Cultural Centre of the Macao Pui Ching Middle School.The curator Dr. Chunhui Zhong introduced the Chinese Cultural Centre a lot of rich collection .

Macao Base for Primary & Secondary Education in Humanities & Social Science visit Kwong Tai Middle School

On the morning of July 10th, Zhu Shoutong, director of the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, Cheang Neng Ian, deputy director, and members of the Centre visited Kwong Tai Middle School. The principal of Kwong Tai Middle School Chan Kin Pong and teachers of Chinese and History warmly received.

FAH-CCHC student of UM Lin Longping receives award for the Story-Writing Competition “Memorable Moments and World Heritage” held by Cultural Affairs Bureau

In order to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the inscription of the “Historic Centre of Macao” in the World Heritage List, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym) of Macao SAR held a series of activities in 2020. In May, it took the lead in hosting the “Memorable Moments and World Heritage” story solicitation competition, inviting citizens to share the unforgettable fragments and stories of the city, and jointly promote the responsibility of cultural heritage conservation.

The social response to the “Memorable Moments and World Heritage”competition was enthusiastic and there were many participants. UM FAH-CCHC student Lin Longping used the short essay “The Smile of Grandpa” to get out of 400 entries and won a winning prize with 10 other contestants. In the morning of July 1, the award ceremony was held at The Mandarin’s House in the historical city of Macau, the world cultural heritage. Ms. Mok Ian Ian, the Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR and the famous writer, presented the award certificates to the 10 winners.

Lin Longping said: “Protecting the World Cultural Heritage and Historic Centre of is the responsibility of everyone living in Macao. The first thing of truly protect the Historic Centre of Macao is to learn the story behind every building of the Historic Centre. Only after a thorough understanding of the cultural connotation of the Historic Centre of Macao can we truly fulfill the responsibility of protecting and inheriting the Historic Centre of Macao”

Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR has issued the ten winning works of this competition to local illustrators to make the postcards of the sites in the historical Centre of Macao for public issuance.

UM holds international video conference on cultural self-confidence

The University of Macau (UM) Research Centre for Humanities in South China and Centre for Chinese History and Culture recently held the Seventh Southern China Humanities Forum, which focused on cultural self-confidence. The event attracted over 250 participants, including scholars, writers, and literary researchers, from more than 20 countries and regions, including China, the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia.

Professor Zhu Shoutong participated in the “Heritage of Chinese Culture Day” held by Matteo Ricci middle school

The primary and secondary departments of Matteo Ricci school held the “Heritage of Chinese Culture Day” on January 18, 2020. The aim is to enhance students’ interest in learning the subject of “culture, history and geography”, stimulate students’ active learning and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.

Through various activities, students have deepened their understanding of Chinese culture, promoted the relationship between teachers and students, and learned the knowledge of “culture, history and place” in a pleasant environment.

Later, teachers and students participated in the game of relevant booths in the classroom and the decorations added the atmosphere of New year’s Eve to the venue. The activity was successfully completed in a warm and joyful atmosphere.

After the game, the students gathered in the school hall to enjoy the cultural performances carefully prepared by the students. Through activities, students can deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and strengthen their sense of national identity. They are also proud of the extensive and profound Chinese culture!

The Chinese culture has a long history, which is worthy inheriting from generation to generation. President Xi Jinping encouraged Macao schools to shoulder such historical responsibility and praised the young generation of Macao as a promising generation, which will surely become the pillar of Macao and even the nation in the future.

On December 26th, 2019, Tian Xuejun who is the deputy minister of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the director of the State Language Committee. Ouyang Yu ,who is Gabinete da Secretária para os Assuntos Sociais e CulturaGoverno da Região Administrativa Especial de Macau. Luo Yonggang,who is the deputy director of the Liason Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R. Lin Jincheng, who is the chairman of University Council of Universityof Macau. Liu Jin, who is the director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Xu Xiaoping, who is the director of the Department of Language Application and Administration Management of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Su Zhaohui,who is the director of the Higher Education Bureau. Song Yonghua, who is the President of the University of Macau. Tian Gang, who is the Vice President of Peking University, and Zhou Zuoyu, who is the Vice President of Beijing Normal University attended the “Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education” unveiling ceremony .And ,the members of the delegation of Ministry of Education visited the Centre for Chinese History and Culture and were introduced the “Chinese History and Culture and Macau” exhibition under the introduction of Zhu Shoutong ,who is the interim director. This exhibition was organized by Centre for Chinese History and Culture and was divided into four parts, which respectively showed the results of “Research”, “Exchange”, “Education and Training” and “Promotion and Popularization” of the Centre. The purpose of the exhibition is to convey the history and inherit the cultural heritage, and contribute to China’s historical and cultural research and promotion. After the exhibition, Minister Tian affirmed the Centre’s great contribution in inheriting and promoting Chinese history and culture in recent years.

This exhibition also attracted many visitors during the campus open day activities. Many students and their parents said that they have seen the efforts of the University of Macau and the Centre for Chinese History and Culture through the exhibition, and they have more deeply realized the connection between the culture of Macau and Chinese history and culture. In 2020, they hope to have more time and opportunities to participate in a series of activities such as education lectures and cultural inspections.

In addition, the staff of the Centre also organized Chinese history and culture open day quiz game, and prepared gifts such as bookmarks and folders for the participators. UM’s South China Quarterly named ‘China’s famous university publication in social sciences’

 

 

South China Quarterly, an academic journal in the fields of humanities and social sciences published by the University of Macau (UM), has been named a ‘Famous University Publication on Social Sciences in China’. Tian Weiping, the journal’s editor-in-chief, has been named an ‘Outstanding Editor-in-Chief of a Famous University Publication on Social Sciences in China’.

The event was organised by a national society for the studies of university journals in humanities and social sciences in China. The society evaluated social sciences publications from nearly 2,000 higher education institutions in China, published in the past five years. The fact that UM’s South China Quarterly was named a famous journal in the field shows national recognition of the quality of the publication. Tian spoke at the award presentation ceremony and shared the process of founding the journal.

Founded by UM and edited by the university’s Centre for Chinese History and Culture, this quarterly journal focuses on global issues, regional issues, and China issues.

 

 

UM students visit Hunan province to experience local history and culture

The University of Macau (UM) Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) recently arranged for a group of 20 students to visit Changsha, Hunan province, to help them learn more about Hunan’s history and culture. Led by Cheang Neng Ian, a programme coordinator from the CCHC, UM students exchanged ideas with student representatives of Hunan University and Central South University on university life. They also discussed ways to promote cultural literacy and awareness among students, the implementation of whole-person education, and the development of campuses with a cultural and artistic ambience. The UM delegation also visited the Orange Isle, the Yuelu Academy, and the Hunan Museum.

First Macao Forum on Education in Humanities and Social Sciences held at UM

 

The first Macao Forum on Education in Humanities and Social Sciences was held at the University of Macau (UM) recently. Co-organised by UM’s Macao Base for Primary & Secondary Education in Humanities & Social Sciences and Centre for Chinese History and Culture, the forum aimed to promote collaboration between UM and local schools in the fields of humanities and social sciences as well as to explore new avenues for education in the fields.

UM scholars and representatives from various primary and secondary schools in Macao participated in the forum and had in-depth discussions on issues related to the creation of an environment that is conducive to education in humanities and social sciences.

UM’s University Council Chair Lam Kam Seng and UM Rector Yonghua Song met with forum participants. UM’s Vice Rector Billy So delivered a speech in which he stressed the significance of the forum, saying that it was part of UM’s effort to promote education in humanities and social sciences in partnership with local schools.
