This Side of the Scenery 2023 ——Shenzhen Nanshan, Zhuhai Xiangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao Regional Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition

In order to demonstrate the charm of calligraphy in the Greater Bay Area, This Side of the Scenery 2023 ——Shenzhen Nanshan, Zhuhai Xiangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao Regional Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition was held on 11th December 2023 in the Library of the University of Macau (UM), and the exhibition was last to 19th December. The exhibition is directed by the  Nanshan District Publicity Department of Shenzhen CPC  and the Shenzhen Calligraphers Association, organised by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau, the Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) and the Associação Nacional dos Calígrafos de Macau, and co-organised by the UM Library, Shenzhen  Nanshan Federation of Literature and Art Circles, and Shenzhen Nanshan District Calligraphers Association, Zhuhai Xiangzhou District Calligraphers Association and China Calligraphers Association (Hong kong ).

The exhibition brought the audience and the authors of the calligraphy to appreciate the exhibits and exchange the ideas of writing skills related issues. The atmosphere was hot. Calligraphers from the four regions through this exchange platform, mutual appreciation, to promote the development of calligraphy in the four regions and contribute to the Bay Area calligraphy style. The 112 pieces of calligraphy works on display, bot cursive, running script, clerical script, regular script, seal script and other styles of calligraphy, reflecting the writing style of calligraphers from different regions. The works on display are either calm and steady or expressive, with a rich variety of forms and outstanding styles that embrace the spirit of traditional culture and contemporary Chinese values. It demonstrates not only the artists’ noble moral qualities and profound artistic attainments, but also their strong patriotism and sincere love for their country, as well as their passion for promoting the traditional art of calligraphy.

Literature and art are the trumpets of the times and can best represent the spirit of an era. Prof. Zhu Shutong, Director of the CCHC, said that it was remarkable that this exhibition was persistently held in the past few years under the influence of the epidemic. Through the This Side of the Scenery 2023, calligraphers from the Greater Bay Area have been meeting friends through calligraphy, promoting the development of calligraphy in the four regions, as well as promoting the development of the whole region with the vitality of culture. The exhibition also showed the calligraphy of four regions from different perspectives to reflect the artist’s artistic vision, spirituality, aesthetics, pen and ink skills and the value, that has also become a cultural brand of the Bay Area with a good brand effect and influence.

Chang Hongcai,  Chairman of Shenzhen Nanshan District Calligraphers Association, named the calligraphy exhibition as This Side of the Scenery 2023. In his view, the four calligraphy exchange exhibition is the use of calligraphy as a link between the four cultures, and across the different, looking for the same. The Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition of the four regions uses calligraphy to enhance cultural recognition and love among each other, and to strengthen cultural cohesion. To this end, he wrote a pair of couplets in simplified Chinese script, “The sound of the guqin is as clear as the sound of running water; the dream of poetry is as warm as spring.” to sing the good times of literature, calligraphy spring breeze, the font is dignified and thick, without losing the lively fun.

“Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition: Beholding the Shooting Stars — The 100th Anniversary of the Publication of Call to Arms” and “Academic Symposium on Lu Xun’s Literature and Chinese Language and Culture” were successfully held at the University of Macau.

On October 20, 2023, the “Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition: Beholding the Shooting Stars — The 100th Anniversary of the Publication of Call to Arms” and the “Academic Symposium on Lu Xun’s Literature and Chinese Language and Culture” were held, which were organized by the Lu Xun Museum in Beijing (the Memorial Hall of the New Culture Movement in Beijing) and the University of Macau (UM), and co-organized by the UM Library, the Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) of UM, and Research Centre for Humanities in South China of UM. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held in the Sky Garden on 2/F of the Library (E2) of UM, followed by a symposium in the conference room of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (E21A) of UM, where many scholars, teachers and students gathered to explore the masterpiece of Mr. Lu Xun, a great master of literature, and to discuss Lu Xun’s literature from the angle of Chinese language and culture.

During the opening ceremony of the exhibition “The 100th Anniversary of the Publication of Call to Arms”, Huang Zhihu, Deputy Director of the Research Office of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., firstly delivered a speech in which he said that, with the support of our country, Macao is accelerating the construction of “One Center”, “One Platform” and “One Base”. In this exhibition, visitors were able to witness Mr. Lu Xun’s precious handwriting, and to feel the national soul, patriotism and literary creativity from a close distance, which is conducive to promoting Macao’s humanistic culture construction, academic research and exchange of ideas. Then, Jiang Yixin, Deputy Director of the Lu Xun Museum (Beijing New Culture Movement Memorial Museum), delivered a speech, in which she said that in Call to Arms, Lu Xun’s unique and insightful literary reflections on the times, history, nationalism and human nature have reached a remarkable high altitude and have had far-reaching impacts. It is meaningful that this event can be held in Macao which is at the forefront of combining Chinese and Western cultures. Zhu Shutong, Director of CCHC of UM, said, A Madman’s Diary is the first modern vernacular novel in China, which opened up the real vernacular written language writing, and Lu Xun played an important role in shaping the soul of Chinese people. By focusing on the whole process of the birth of Call to Arms and through in-depth academic research, we can better grasp the significance of Lu Xun’s modern Chinese writing to Chinese culture. After the official announcement of the opening of the exhibition, Qin Suyin, Deputy Director of the Research Department of the Lu Xun Museum (Beijing New Culture Movement Memorial Museum), finally introduced the contents of the exhibition to the audience.

After the opening ceremony, guests and scholars moved to the conference room for the Academic Symposium on Lu Xun’s Literature and Chinese Language and Culture. At the beginning, two research librarians from the Lu Xun Museum in Beijing, Jiang Yixin and Liu Jing, gave speeches on the topics of “From ‘call to arms’ to Call to Arms: On the Occurrence of Lu Xun Literature of ‘Sound the Alarm’” and “‘Jin Xinxian’ in Call to Arms-Preface”. At the discussion session, several doctoral students from UM expressed their own opinions and made brilliant speeches with new perspectives. At the end of the symposium, Zhu Shoutong concluded that Lu Xun’s research is not only related to the study of social phenomenon, but also the study of risk. Teenagers of UM are expected to study hard to establish a solid foundation, have the courage to take risks and climb the mountain in the path of study like Lu Xun.

UM inaugurates Suao Pavilion and kicks off Festival of Chinese Culture

The University of Macau (UM) held the inauguration ceremony of the Suao Pavilion and the opening ceremony of the Second Festival of Chinese Culture. The event was attended by a total of 60 guests, including government officials and representatives of UM and other associations. The Suao Pavilion was built through donations by the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association and the Suzhou Overseas Friendship Association. It is located on the lawn outside the Cultural Building at UM. The pavilion symbolises the cultural exchanges between Jiangsu and Macao, as well as the heritage of Chinese history and culture. It not only enriches the cultural landscape of the campus, but also demonstrates the harmonious coexistence of the Jiangnan and Lingnan cultures.

On the other hand, the event kicked off the Second Festival of Chinese Culture organised by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of UM. The festival has three components: 1) lectures, promotion, and education on Chinese history and culture; 2) exhibitions, performances, and demonstrations on Chinese history and culture; and 3) forums, seminars, and debates on Chinese culture and Macao culture. In addition, the Henan Research Institute of Culture and History was invited to be the co-organiser of the festival, in the hope of enhancing the academic quality of the forums with its rich academic resources. The university will be holding nearly 100 activities with its partner universities during the festival.

2023 New Hong Kong and Macau Chinese New Year Calligraphy Competition Exhibition: Young Calligraphers’ Talents Bloom, Chinese Culture Passes down the generations

In order to actively promote Macao’s cultural and educational activities, and to enhance young people’s interest and attainment in calligraphy, the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau participates in the “Chinese New Year Calligraphy Competition” organized by the Macao Calligraphy Education and Research Association, China Travel Service (Macao) , and the National Calligraphers Association of Macao, and so on, and puts together a touring exhibition of award-winning works of calligraphy from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macao, exhibiting the traditional art and culture of the Chinese nation, and letting young calligraphers of the three places to share with the world. This year, the format of the competition is different from previous years. This year, on the basis of the previous competition system, the Greater Bay Area element was added to include students and young people from Foshan, Shunde, Zhuhai, etc., and at the same time, to promote the excellent Chinese culture, cultivate and promote the youth’s love of Chinese Calligraphy and improve the standard of the art.

The winning students of the competition will be directly qualified to participate in the China National Mitty Cup Finalist Competition, and will have the opportunity to participate in the Final Competition in Nanjing and Zhenjiang, and some of the outstanding students will be recommended for exhibitions in Korea, Malaysia, and Mainland China, which will further promote the art of calligraphy to the international arena by young people. The awarded works will be exhibited at E34-G016, Cultural Building of the University of Macau for half a month (from 16th June to 30th June, 2023), and teachers and students are cordially invited to visit the exhibition.

 

The Collision of Tradition and Technology: “An Academic Seminar on Chinese Culture and the Future of New Chinese Poetry ” Held at the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau

On the morning of 13 April, 2023, the “Academic Seminar on Chinese Culture and the Future of New Chinese Poetry – A Summary of the First 70 Issues of “Contemporary Poetry”, co-organized by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture and the Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre of the University of Macau, was held at the Cultural Building of the University of Macau. Nearly 30 experts and scholars from Macau and abroad discussed the development of Chinese poetry from the perspectives of history, culture, poetry, fiction, technology, and medicine, as well as the influence and impact of ChatGPT on Chinese poetry. The speech was delivered by Guru, well-known scholar of yogic thought; Prof. Agnes Lam, Director of Centre for Macau Studies, Prof. Yuan Yulin, Head of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Distinguished Professor Ouyang Jianghe of Beijing Normal University, renowned poet Xiao Xiao, and Prof. Zhang Qinghua , Associate Dean of the School of Chinese Language and Literature of Beijing Normal University.

“The MOU Signing Ceremony and Press Conference on 2023 Essay Competition for High School Students at UM” was successfully held

On 3rd August , 2023, the Centre for Macau Studies of the University of Macau , Well link Bank and the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau successfully collaborated to hold the “the MOU Signing Ceremony and Press Conference on 2023 Essay Competition for High School Students at UM”. The MOU was signed by Prof. Agnes Lam Iok Fong, director of the CMS, and Chong Sio Fai, executive director and chief executive officer of Well Link Bank, under the witness of Long Wai Lam, registrar of UM, and Lao Pun Lap, independent non-executive director of Well Link Bank. Ms. KUAN Sio In, Leona also attended the ceremony to represent for the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau.

During the ceremony, Prof. Agnes Lam Iok Fong, director of the CMS, expressed that The CMS, as one of the member units of the Macao Base for Primary & Secondary Education in Humanities & Social Sciences, organised the essay competition with the aim of encouraging youth people in Macao to reflect on Macao’s past and future in light of the 5000 years of civilisation of the country. It is hoped that the participants will explore, from their perspectives, how Chinese civilisation can play a role in today’s society in order to contribute to national development and the progress of human civilisation.

The essay competition is co-organised by the CMS, Well Link Bank, and the Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) of UM. It aims to enable young people in Macao to gain a better understanding of Chinese history and culture, while leveraging their creativity and imagination to combine their knowledge of history with real-life experience. This essay competition is also an important milestone in the cooperation between the two organizations.

2023 Greater Bay Area Visual Arts Group Exhibition Successfully Held at the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau

On 5th August , 2023, the “2023 Greater Bay Area Visual Arts Group Exhibition (Macao Region)” was officially opened by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, the Macao Calligraphers Association, the Addy Yiu Visual Arts Research Association, the Hong Kong Multi-Visual Arts Association in collaboration with Macao Digital Photogaphy Association, the Shenzhen Young Photographers’ Association(SZYPA), the Shenzhen Tianli Huifang Vision Company Limited, and Foshan City Women Literary and Artistic Artists’ Association.

Ribbon Cutting

The exhibition was held in the Multifunctional Exhibition Hall G016, Cultural Building (E34) of the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, and attracted many artists from the Greater Bay Area. Professor Prof. Zhu Shoutong, Director of Centre for Chinese History and Culture of the University of Macau, expressed that visual art is a Chinese historical and cultural art worthy of promotion, and that the exhibition was inspired by different artistic fields that can be tolerated and worked together to truly sublimate the arts for the benefit of the future. The President of The Macao Calligraphers’ Association, Ms. Kung Po Mei in her speech said that the Outline of the National 13th Five-Year Plan proposes to support Hong Kong and Macao to play an important role in the Pan-Pearl River Delta (PPRD) regional cooperation, and to promote the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The Bay Area has great potential for development in industry, commerce, finance, innovation and arts and culture. The organizer hopes to promote the development of the Greater Bay Area through this event. At the same time, the organizer hoped to promote the interaction and unity of visual artists in the Greater Bay Area through the event.
