UM inaugurates Macao Base for Primary & Secondary Education in Humanities & Social Sciences
/in Article, Event, News /by Zhu Menghuan mb74268Initiated by UM and jointly established by Macao Foundation, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of Macao (DSEJ), the Chinese Educators Association of Macau (CEAM), and Macao Catholic Schools Association (MCSA), the base is comprised of UM’s Centre for Chinese History and Culture, Confucius Institute, Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre, and Centre for Macau Studies. Officiating guests at the inauguration ceremony included Xue Xiaofeng, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Lam Kam Seng, chair of UM’s University Council; Wu Zhiliang, president of the Administrative Committee of Macao Foundation; Yonghua Song, rector of UM; Lou Pak Sang, director of the DSEJ; Ho Sio Kam, president of the CEAM; Kolbe Vong, director general of the MCSA; and Lionel Ni, vice rector (academic affairs) of UM.
In his speech, Rector Yonghua Song said that ever since the establishment of the Macao SAR, UM has spared no effort to create a better learning environment to help young adults in Macao to grow, and to instill in them the appropriate national identity and ethos, so that they could participate in social practice with a healthier mindset. All this has been done under the guiding principles of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy, and with an urgent sense of social responsibility and an eye towards lofty aims.
Rector Song added that China is now entering a decisive period in its effort to create a moderately prosperous society, with the 13th Five-Year Plan, the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, and the Greater Bay Area project in full swing. Chinese people are working towards the goal of realising the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. These developments have created unprecedented opportunities and challenges for young adults in Macao. Therefore, young adults in Macao must cultivate a love for Macao and for the country, and actively prepare themselves to contribute to the development of China.
Hao Yufan, director of the Centre for Chinese History and Culture at UM, said that as one of the first educational bases in humanities and social sciences for primary and secondary school students, the centre has organised many activities related to Chinese history and culture ever since its founding in early 2017. For instance, it launched a newspaper for young adults in Macao, produced a children’s book in Chinese history and culture for students from Portuguese and English schools in Macao, and organised more than 30 masters’ lectures in Chinese history and culture in local secondary and primary schools. These activities have been very well received by teachers and students from local schools. Moreover, this June, the centre launched a series of training and teaching programmes, including a master’s degree programme in literature, a training programme for instructors of courses in Chinese history and culture, comic book series on Chinese history and culture, and a certificate programme in Macao and Chinese civilisation for high school students in Macao.
A book launch and presentation ceremony for a children’s book on Chinese history and culture in the Portuguese language was also held at the event. The comic book presents the history of China in an entertaining manner, with the aim of encouraging students from Portuguese schools in Macao as well as young adults and parents from Portuguese-speaking countries to learn more about Chinese culture, thereby promoting traditional Chinese culture to foreigners.
